Field Music Standards for Fife
| Beginner Level: |
| – Anyone who is not yet at the below-listed Novice Level |
| Novice Level: |
| – Must be able to play all the notes on the fife correctly and perform major scales of G, D and A – two octaves. – Must be able to play five tunes that were used in the Civil War period – Must be able to play the following Camp Duty tunes from the Nevins’ manual to a level of proficiency which makes them recognizable other fifers, officers, and troops: – Three Camps – Slow Scotch – Three Cheers |
| Intermediate Level: |
| – In addition to thoroughly mastering the requirements of the previous level (i.e., almost without mistakes): – Must be able to play ten additional tunes from the period. – Must be able to recognizably play the following additional Camp Duty tunes from the Nevins’ manual: – Two additional Reveille tunes – Breakfast Call (Peas Upon a Trencher) – Dinner Call – Adjutant’s Call – Drill Call – The Doublings of the Tattoo – At least two of the Tattoo tunes |
| Advanced Level: |
| In addition to thoroughly mastering the requirements of the previous level (i.e., almost without mistakes): – Must be able to correctly play the remaining Camp Duty from the Nevins’ manual. Note: It is likely that not all of the duty will be performed during the weekend. However, it is expected that an advanced fifer should be able to perform any and all of the Duty Music if and when approached. – Must be able to play Funeral March No. 1 (Nevins) and Merry Men from the Grave. – Must be able to correctly play both the full Reveille and Tattoo. – Must be able to correctly play an additional 15 Civil War tunes. |
